' I can't say how often I have heard a young photographer exclaim: if only I could afford a Nikon, or a Hasselblad, or a Leica, I, too, could make great photographs. And the same sentiment is implied in all the ads in photo-magazines that, counting on snob appeal, urge their readers to "trade up" to some more expensive camera.

This, in my opinion, is baloney.'

Oldest photography journal reverts to monthly publication

"Once we decided that a monthly format would better serve our readers, with more in-depth analysis and greater space to showcase the stunning photographs we feature, we began to rethink everything about what a magazine for professional photographer should be," says British Journal of Photography editor Simon Bainbridge.

"The new look reflects the creative industry we work in, and celebrates the talent of the professionals we serve. But, as the industry’s journal of record, we also believe we have a duty to go out and do extensive research on what’s going on in the professional photography market and feed that back to readers, so they’re armed with information about the latest trends, technologies and issues facing them in their business."

He adds: "We believe that print magazines have a positive future, but somewhere along the line publishers have lost sense of what makes them so appealing, and in doing so they’ve given too much ground to the internet. Why do something in print that you can do equally well on the web? So, when we began thinking about what we could deliver as a monthly, we decided to play to the strengths of print."

Panasonic DMC-GF1 Review

In the days before digital you could buy a relatively sophisticated, compact sized camera that came with an absolute minimum number of operating controls. The lens incorporated a focusing ring, and another to set the f stop. Shutter time was dial set and a lever enabled film advance and shutter arming. The settings before releasing the shutter were straightforward and quickly executed.

Panasonic's DMC-GF1 Micro Four Thirds format camera above, can fit Leica lenses.

Step forward into the world of electronics and you find a completely different mindset that attempts to resolve the problems of device and user interaction. It's a conundrum made all the more complex because the nature of the beast means its possible to install a far greater array of features.

SETTING MANUAL FOCUS ASSIST FOR THIRD PARTY MECHANICAL MANUAL FOCUS LENSES USING THIRD PARTY ADAPTERS ON THE OLYMPUS PEN E-P1 CAMERA.

On the Olympus Pen E-P1 digital camera;
1. set the function button to engage the required focus mode.
2. press the INFO button several times until the green AF focus area rectangle shows on the screen.
3. press OK. The small area focus segment appears on screen to enable critical focus.
4.Press OK again once critical focus is established to return to the full screen image to compose the motif.
5. Repeat the above procedure for each new frame.

"This event has caused a lot of problems which will take time to correct and now we want to totally rethink the paths we will take for the future and calm down all this speculation. However, we are optimistic." , said director of business development Stefan Daniel on Tuesday, 26th February, 2008.

Leica M8 Handbook and Review

2nd August 2007.

The frequency of calls received regarding the possibility of my writing and publishing the Leica M8 handbook has increased in recent weeks.

Any news of the possibility of this event coming to pass in the foreseeable future will be posted on this site. I have first have to make a thorough evaluation of the camera and this is now in progress with a serial production model. I anticipate several more months of use in real assignment situations before any work could start on a handbook. There is also the small problem of a higher frequency of digital model replacement by Leica gnawing at the decision of whether or not to publish.

In the meantime, for those who may be interested, my Leica M8 review report thus far, will be published in The British Journal of Photography issue of 8th August 2007. The magazine is available on newsstands in major cities but should probably be ordered in advance by those resident in the provinces.

"Faceless and nameless" Photographic icons

The most famous of all these nameless icons, perhaps, is the individual who, in 1989, stepped into Tiananmen Square and stopped an advancing line of tanks. His identity never revealed, he's known only as the 'Unknown Rebel' or 'Tank Man'.
Napalm Girl or Running Girl shows a nine-year-old girl running down a road, fleeing a napalm attack during the Vietnam War. She's naked, having torn off her clothes, which were on fire.
The 'Falling Man' came to symbolise the unspeakable horrors of 9/11.
While written testimony has the capacity to shock, a single iconic image has the power to pack an emotional punch that lingers on in the mind. Graeme Green examines the impact of some of the most shocking and memorable images of recent times...........

World Press Photo 2006; opinion

For the first time in the annals of stills photography, a colour photograph may come to resonate in the ranks of the top twenty most memorable.

Spencer Platt's picture of a car load of Lebanese well-to-dos, drive-by rubbernecking the aftermath of Israeli bombing in Beirut last August, is a brilliantly snatched frame of one of life's many incongruous moments.

For me, this picture skillfuly epitomises the ultimate goal of photographers everywhere who are concerned with documenting the human condition, enshrining, as it does, all the elements we sometimes trust anticipation and chance to bring together in a single frame. Here, through the chaotic scenery, trashed appliances and the rubble of collateral demolition, a gleaming red, open top sports car drifts serenely by, its occupants a bearded driver and four young apparently squeaky clean and smartly dressed girls gawking at the mess surrounding them. One is holding up a cellphone, from which she could be sending a message or a just captured photo of the scenery; another holds a tissue to her visage, as if gagging on the possibly foul air; another strains eagerly to more clearly see the appalling damage.

Wherever one looks in this image, more information keeps coming back to the viewer, bits of detail missed in the first take. The car is a convertible. A background passer-by is also engrossed on a mobile phone. Three of the girls are wearing expensive looking sunglasses. In the chaotic junkyard background, the remains of an air-con unit and other domestic household items lay forlornly rubbished amidst a few surviving palm fronds. Except for the vivid red of the car body panels, colours are mostly subdued, monochromatic in tone and hue, the black and white female attire banging out their distinctive contrast to the red like a loud drum.

No movie footage, videography sequence or desk-top frame grab of it would have produced such a remarkable and riveting image. Newsprint media moguls of the future take note, stills photography is not dead and it still retains the greater power to move the viewer. Perhaps with Platt's picture, we can also rejoice that great photography is back on the map; it's been absent long enough.

The Nikon F2 - Masterpiece of camera engineering

"It's something of a Cindarella. It appeals almost equally to middle aged professionals for purely nostalgic reasons as well as to photographers in their early twenties who are looking for a reliable and beautifully made camera. You could say, the F2 is a camera which doesn't know a problem."

Gray Levitt at Gray's of Westminster who are the specialist Nikon dealers in London told me recently he wished he could find more F2's.

Flat bed frustrations

A reader comment on our posting (ajaxnetphoto.blogspot.com/2006/11) concerned with cleaning flat bed scanners wondered why just the glass platen was not cleaned first to gain some idea of possible improvements.

There is more to come on this subject. Part II is in preparation and will be posted before Christmas. In fact, there is a whole lot about scanners, dedicated film, as well as flatbeds in the 'work in progress' file; interested parties watch this space. If you have questions, please ask, I can't guarantee to answer everything, but I'll give it a shot.

Keep dumbing it down and it will go away.

All the talk of how video footage and frame grabs will come to be the norm for newspaper and news agency coverage in the years ahead takes stills photography off the agenda.

There are enough of us out there, who, while recognising the new technology will drive some audiences to other media, are still enamoured enough to want to do things our own way. Uphold the belief in what you do and that it can work and both old and new markets will support it.

And BTW, frame grabs are nothing new. The Ap and other wire agencies have been doing it for decades.

TALKING HEADS

A lot of people are talking a lot about film. Mostly, it seems to me, they are talking about the end of it. Wading through the dross, I see barely a glint of optimism for its happy future.

Taking all the factors into consideration, it is hardly suprising that anyone finds anything good to say; the convenient lab you last visited a week ago has suddenly stopped processing....etcetera, etcetera.

This column will not go there.

We believe in film. I believe in film. My wife believes in film. I must know hundreds of people who still want to use it. We have dozens of good reasons for wanting the pleasure of using it to continue.

Luckily, some manufacturers of film are of the same opinion. When they can no longer sell it through the normal retail channels, they'll find another way. When the public can no longer get the stuff processed conveniently at the local d&p store, film manufacturers will do deals with chemical suppliers to enable a ready supply of soup in attractive easy-to-use kits to anyone who wants to mess up the kitchen sink. And as those who use a lot of film already know, the logistical supply of chemicals for messing up the kitchen sink has been in place for decades.

Film camera manufacturers have similar opinions. Put the two technologies together and the world's largest film processing laboratory could become a reality.

Rapid Turnarounds

Almost 40 years ago, the innovative photojournalist David Douglas Duncan used a table top stabilsation paper processor to make the prints for his mammoth illustrated biography Yankee Nomad. Short deadlines and a massive editing task persuaded Duncan to take this route insted of the time consuming dish development process which would have given him more control over the final image quality. Stabilisation paper processing is an acquired skill, demanding rapid baseboard actions to burn in and hold back areas of the image in need of tweaking. There isn't a single b+w reproduction in the book which suffers the look of a hastily made print; the gravure reproduction is excellent. In its time, I thought the repro quality was outstanding.

Today, some photographers I know are still insisting original b+w prints effect the highest quality image on the printed page. The very idea of it is pure mythology. Considering the giant steps made for computerised printing press design in the past two decades, the digital image straight-to-plate techniques used in most reputable houses as well as much improved inks and paper, paper images in need of digitalising run a poor second in repro quality even to run-of-the-mill scans off the original negative made on a desk-top dedicated film scanner. Given the capacity of the computer to manipulate the scanned image to a far greater degree than is possible by hand under an enlarger, I imagine Duncan would have been in his element in producing the images for a new Nomad today. It would have just taken a lot longer.

PANASONIC UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE PROJECT

According to my sources at Panasonic the 20 photographers who will be involved in this project have been selected. A list of who they are will be posted on the >www.ourplaceworldheritage.com< site next week. The organiser of the project Geoff Steven has chosen the photographers and they will be paid by Our Place Publishing Ltd through the sponsorship fee. Panasonic is the main and only sponsor for this project
and the company is currently loaning the DMC-L1, DMC-FZ50 and DMC-LX2 to the project. The bulk of the photographers will use the DMC-L1.

TAMRON - independent lens maker

The CCD contains more than 5 million light-sensitive picture elements arranged in an area only 6.7 x 5.8 mm for a 1/1.8 type CCD. The Tamron lens module for digital cameras has the power to project an image onto this minuscule CCD. The image can then be magnified close to 4,000 times to a maximum A4 size(210mm¥297mm) for printing. This incredible magnification ratio does not normally happen with a film camera. The digital camera image sharpness is directly related to the quality of lenses. Tamron is a globally integrated optical maker capable of designing and mass-producing optical systems with this "ultra high resolution" required for digital cameras.
